Ireland and Montenegro Celebrate Stronger Bonds

St Patrick’s Day Celebration in Podgorica

The Ambassador of Ireland and the President of Montenegro underscored the strengthening of bilateral relations and support for European integration

In the presence of numerous guests from Montenegro’s public and social spheres, a ceremonial reception was held in Podgorica to mark St Patrick’s Day Ireland’s national holiday, which symbolises unity, family gathering, and joy, and is recognised and celebrated worldwide. The event, distinguished by a rich musical programme featuring traditional Irish dancers and musicians, as well as a Montenegrin folklore ensemble and a violin soloist, was opened by the Ambassador of Ireland to Montenegro, Kevin Colgan, the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, and the Director of Montenegro Duty Free, Christopher Dunham Haigh. In his opening address, Ambassador Colgan emphasised that Montenegro enjoys the strong support of all European Union member states, highlighting the ongoing progress of bilateral relations between the two nations.

“I am pleased to see that in recent months, relations between Ireland and Montenegro have been further strengthened. From the high level of meetings with our government, it is clear how committed we are to Montenegro,” said Colgan.

The President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, stated that relations with Ireland are entering a new phase, with strong support for his country’s European path. “Montenegro remains firmly committed to reforms and to the achievement of its strategic goal membership of the European Union. We are determined to become the next EU member state, and in this endeavour we greatly value the support of all our partners, and of Ireland in particular. I am convinced that with the continued support of our European partners we can move decisively forward and affirm the policy of enlargement as an investment in the stability and prosperity of Europe,” said Milatović.

In a separate statement to the media, Ambassador Colgan assessed that Montenegro has made significant progress in the European Union accession process. “I believe that Montenegro has done an enormous amount of work so far. You have completed a large part of the accession process, and I have no doubt that you will succeed in the next phase as well,” said Colgan.

He also underlined that Ireland will keep offering strong support for Montene “If Ireland, from being one of the poorest countries, has become one of the wealthiest in the European Union then so can Montenegro. Stay focused and continue with reforms,” said Colgan.

The reception was held at the Knjaz estate, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Ireland and the company Air Arianta, which operates in Montenegro under the name Montenegro Duty Free. The company’s Director, Christopher Dunham Haigh, emphasised a commitment to the development of duty-free business and to the promotion of both international and Montenegrin products. He stated that with accession to the European Union, the country becomes more attractive for new investment.
